Talks and discussions on the topic “Gender and Gender Equality” were held in Tsoghamarg and Arpeni communities on December 19, 2011. The discussions were held by the invited specialist Jina Sargizova. The meetings had a goal to get the participants to know gender issues, to differentiate the notions of gender and sex, to speak about the problems of gender equality in our country. Through numerous examples J. Sargizova presented the notions of “gender” and “sex”, showed that coming from our mentality, stereotypes, our perceptions of men and women we undertake certain roles, make division of work and all this is later expressed in the economic, political, social spheres of the country.
During the meeting the statistic data in the labour market of Armenia were discussed, which show gender inequality and gender discrimination in this sphere. Gender equality is first of all a human right. Women, as well as men, have the right to live in descent conditions and a descent life, which is stated in RA Constitution.
The conclusions in both meetings were the same: empowerment of women and their involvement in all kinds of economic, political, management activities will become a basis for raising the social-economic well being and reduction of poverty on both personal, community and state levels.

First of all the President of the NGO WFD Gohar Markosyan thanked all the participants for their participation and active work. She appreciated the increase in the number of volunteers in the communities, which mostly supports mobilization and empowerment of the communities: “Community mobilization is the most difficult work and I am happy that our joint work is successful. Organization of events and participation in the work of the Community Centers on volunteer basis does not seem “strange” today. Our goal is to have a mobilized community. Our community is our home, and we must build it with our own hands. Even if we expect assistance from outside, we have to participate in it and have our contribution in all the issues,”- mentioned Gohar Markosyan. The village heads present at the meeting in their turn expressed their gratitude to the NGO WFD for involving their villages in the project: “… I would like to thank you for presenting us with such a Center, because it has really changed a lot in our community. Community Center has made the routine life of the village more alive. We are like one family now, and let this family grow and empower…,” – mentioned Hovsep Tonoyan, the Head of Tsoghamarg community.
“It is not a secret for anyone that the communities are getting empty today, the young leave villages. This is a pain of all of us, and I am very happy that the NGO “Women for Development” is trying to be useful for us, to assist the young. I would very much like to come to a situation when no outside assistance is necessary, when due to our joint efforts we will be able to stand on our feet and empower our communities…”- said the director of Torosgyugh school Garegin Hakobyan.
During the meeting the responsible persons for all the Community Centers presented their reports for the period October- December, discussed the work carried out and achievements, mentioned the positive changes which are noticeable due to the activities of the Community Centers. “… I have always liked to organize different events, have always had interesting ideas, but as a nurse I was not able to organize such big events. Today it is not only me who gladly organizes events, but also a lot of volunteers that help me. Due to them we were able to revive the nice tradition of the national holiday Vardavar, which had been forgotten for many years…,” – mentioned in her speech Anahit Vardanyan, the responsible person for Goghovit Community Center.
“The Community Center helps to mobilize the community, to make the village more united. A vivid evidence to this is the event organized on September 21. The activities organized in the Community Center are also a good opportunity especially for young women and girls to show their abilities and skills, to be recognized as specialists…,” – mentioned in her report Armenuhi Arakelyan, the responsible person for Lanjik Community Center.

Since 1991 more than 3700 organizations in about 164 countries participate in the annual “16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence” international campaign, which calls to eliminate all kinds of violence against women. The Campaign starts on November 25 and lasts till December 10. The roots of the campaign are in the violent murder of 14 Canadian students in 1989, which also became basis for another campaign – “White ribbons”, which symbolizes refusal of violence towards women.
Starting from 2001 the campaign is also carried out in Armenia, and its goal is to emphasize once again the importance of the gender violence problem throughout the world and in Armenia, as well as to involve a bigger number of participants.
In the fames of the campaign the responsible persons and volunteers of the NGO “WFD” beneficiary communities participated in the training “AIDS problem and projects directed to its Prevention in Armenia” in the frames of the “16 days of Activism against Gender Violence” campaign in Armenia, which was conducted by Jina Sargizova, “16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence” Campaign Coordinator. The participants of the training got acquainted with the phenomenon of trafficking, as well as violence against men, who may become victims of trafficking and how to avoid it. Trainings against trafficking are especially important for the population of rural areas, because as Jina Sargizova mentioned, the urban population is quite aware of trafficking and, as researches have shown, a big number of the trafficking victims is at present rural population. Results of different sociological surveys about social-political participation in Armenia and gender discrimination against women were presented at the training. Numerous examples and figures were brought to show the intolerant attitude of the society, stereotypes and unequal conditions towards women. A separate topic of discussion became the issue of HIV/AIDS in Armenia and activities directed to its prevention.
The participants also had a chance to watch and discuss the film “The Butterfly” in memory of 19-year-old Zaruhi Petrosyan, which is built on real stories about violence against women in Armenia.

Starting from October 2011 meetings on healthcare issues are being held in the Community Centers of 3 beneficiary villages of the NGO “Women for Development” - Tsoghamarg, Torosgyugh and Arpeni. The meetings are conducted by the responsible for the healthcare department of the NGO, medical doctor Karine Haroyan. Meetings on the topics “Principles of healthy lifestyle”, “Sexual maturity”, “Reproductive health, reproductive right and family planning”, “Stress, ways of its overcoming”, “Healthy food” are already conducted in the above mentioned Community Centers. All the topics under discussion are very necessary and up-to date, because the experience has shown that women and young girls do not mainly have knowledge on reproductive health and family planning, they do not know how to protect themselves from undesirable pregnancy and what kind of problems may occur in the result of abortions.
The topic “Sexual maturity” was especially interesting for the teenagers. This issue is very sensitive and personal in Armenia, and talks on these topics are generally not common between parents and teenagers especially in the villages. In the result teenage boys and girls almost have no knowledge either about their body or the changes and developments that take place in their organisms. Consequently, lack of information either remains open or is filled from untruthful sources.
These meetings are usually very warm and friendly. Active participation of the community members and numerous questions directed to the doctor speak about it. According to their words, all the topics discussed are very interesting and useful, and the way of their presentation is acceptable and understandable.
Meetings on healthcare issues will go on both in these communities and in other project beneficiary ones.

Speaking about the activities of the Center, the responsible for Bayandur Community Center Sophya Sargsyan said: “A few days ago one of the parents asked me what I am doing that her kid loves me and listens to me more that her. Isn’t it enough? But if we speak more seriously, the changes in the community are visible for everybody. If previously it was unusual to revive our national dance and perform it on the stage, today the community wants it to be sustainable. We have to present the old in a new way and keep it. Besides, there are often guests visiting our village, and we are glad we have something to show…”

The reporting date of October 15 was chosen on purpose. Rural Women’s International Day declared by UN has been celebrated on this day since 1997. A very nice event devoted to the day was organized by the Lanjik Community Center responsible Armenuhi Araqelyan and the volunteers. They presented to the participants the very important role that rural women play throughout the world –from ensuring food security and up to ensuring independence and sustainability of rural areas, but still they have a very low status and remain ignored by the society and the state. International Women’s Day has the goal to change this stereotype, to remind the society how much we all owe to rural women and how important it is to value and appreciate their hard work. All this was followed by the volunteers’ songs and dances. The members of Lanjik Karate Club also participated in the event presenting a show of Eastern martial art.
